Farm Diary continued (4)

26th March 1999

There's been a lot happening. We started lambing yesterday. The earliest 'due' date is Monday, so we're pleased we haven't started sooner. Our previous 2 years (this is our 3rd so we've still a lot to learn), we've had several fairly premature lambs by this stage -- and they need a lot of extra care.

James went to check them at 6.00am and found a lovely ram lamb. The mother had been scanned as twins, but she's only had the one. Now we're waiting for a rush of them.

First lamb of 1999.
24 hours old. The yellow colour is from the iodine that we put on its navel.

The other thing that's happening is 300 chickens arriving this afternoon.
James is still working on putting the complicated drinkers together and plumbing them in. (If it works they'll have a constant supply of our spring water -- none of that chlorinated mains rubbish).

The huts arrived on Wednesday. Getting them into the field proved rather less than straight forward.

Our ancient tractor is holding up the house, in the 'only just wide enough but too narrow for lorry + house' gateway, whilst the landrover pulls the lorryout of the mud and the house can then be lowered and pulled through.

one very small, brave, 4 weeks old chicken.

The chicks arrived about 5.00 pm, all 385 of them. They were as noisy as a bus load of school children, very excited, and rushing all over the place.
